The Brand Test

Apple has a brand. 

Ford has a logo. 

I know this because if Apple designed a car we could imagine what that would look like. We can anticipate the features, the design, the experience. 

However, if Ford developed a smartphone we have no idea what that would even be like. We can not comprehend how or why this would even be possible. 

That is because Apple has a brand. Ford has a logo. 

There is nothing wrong with being a logo. Logos are some of the best companies on the planet. Millions of people love their products and service. But brands. They're different. 

Brands can transcend industries because those who believe in the brand - believe in the brand. Their customers are willing to follow them on any path they take because they have proven time and time again with high-quality products and service that the experience they will deliver will far exceed whatever expectations they might have had in their heads. 

This why Apple which is a computer company can make watches and everyone stands in line to get one. 

There isn't a reasonable expectation that an electronics company has any right to be in the high-end watch business in the first place.
